Crypto Super Yachts Are a Thing

Earlier this summer I was commissioned by Boat International to write a feature about what’s going on in the world of super yachts and crypto.

That piece is now up for Boat International subscribers.

As I noted on Twitter earlier today the TLDR is:

  1. Some people are selling superyachts for crypto, but mostly as a marketing thing. Everyone has to do KYC/AML anyway, so really it’s just a question of a special promo for those with bitcoin wealth (the FX conversation fees are absorbed by the yacht companies in this way).
  2. There are also some people trying to tokenise assets on board of real yachts, and others offering virtual yachting licenses for the selling of yacht NFTs. (Also another type of marketing for core yachts).
  3. The idea of time-sharing yachts is making a comeback, but, according my former colleague Brendan Greeley (the FT’s unofficial boating correspondent), it’s not a good idea.

But shh... If you want to read the full piece, I’ve uploaded the rough cut version here in PDF form. CLICK HERE. I won’t tell Boat International if you don’t.

FYI it’s $2,647 asking price for this NFT gem from CloudYachts.
